Types of Chinese Student Visa
There are two types of China student visa for which you can apply, depending on the duration of your education program. Student visa types include X1 and X2. X1 visa: For long-term study > 180 days

X1 Visa
The X1 visa is for long-term students studying for more than six months in China. X2 Visa

The Requirements for a Chinese Student Visa

- Valid Passport: Your passport should be valid for at least six months from the date of your visa application. It should also have one blank page for the visa.
- Admission Letter/Notice: The admission letter/notice is an official document issued by the China University or college that you have been accepted to. It should include the name of the university or college, your name, passport number, tuition fees and the program of study. Once you have been accepted into a university or college in China, they will send the soft copy to your registered e-mail address. Also, the University will normally send the hardcopy to your registered mailing address after the admission notice is printed and stamped. Make sure there is a university seal in the letter. In addition, the letter must be in both English and Chinese.
- JW201/JW202 Form: The JW201 or JW202 form is an official document issued by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The University will help you apply for them once you are accepted to the program or after receiving your deposit or tuition fee payment. It is used to confirm your status as a student and includes information about your program of study, the duration of your stay, and your financial support.
- Visa Application Form: You will need to complete the Chinese student visa application form, which you can download from the website of the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country. Make sure you complete all the sections.
- Photographs: A photo taken within the last six months and has a dimension of 48 mm x 33 mm with white background. Sample of passport-sized photo.

Steps to Apply for a Chinese Student Visa

Contact the China Visa Application Service Centers (CVASC) to schedule an appointment. You may submit the application to the consular office of the Chinese embassies, consulates, or China Visa Application Service Centers (CVASC) in person. Please ensure that the application information is accurate and truthful; otherwise, you will be responsible for any potential losses. Fill out the Chinese student visa application form and download it. Be sure to sign the form and complete all the relevant fields. They will send you an email for an interview if all of the necessary documents are accurate and approved.
Step-2: Gather the rest of the required Documents
Collect all the required documents including your Admission Letter/Notice, JW201/JW202 Form, Original Passport, Visa Application Form, Photographs, Financial Support Documents (Bank Statements, Solvency), and Foreigner Physical Examination Record Certificate.
Step-3: Interview and submit the all required documents
Submit your application to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate Office in your country together with all the required documents. It might be necessary to schedule an appointment in advance. To perform an interview and confirm the submitted documents, you might still need to visit the Chinese Embassy, Consulate-General or China Visa Application Service Centers (CVASC). If you have previously overstayed your visa in China, this is typical. In the majority of places, appointments are necessary.
Step-4: Pay the Visa Application Fee

When your visa is approved and collect it, then you are free to travel to China.

Once you have obtained your visa sticker and passport, it’s time to prepare for your departure and arrival in China. Before you leave, you should make sure that you have all the necessary documents and items for your travel and study in China, including that-
- Original Passport with the valid student visa
- Admission Notice and JW201/JW202 form
- Foreigner physical examination record and blood test report
- Your flight ticket and accommodation confirmation
- Your health insurance and travel insurance
- Your personal belongings and money
- Any other documents or items required by your university or program.
When you arrive in China, follow the immigration procedures at the airport and present your passport and valid visa to the immigration officer. It’s also advisable to carry your admission notice and JW201/JW202 form which may be necessary for further verification at the immigration. You should also declare any items that are subject to customs inspection or taxation. After clearing immigration and customs, make your way to your university or accommodation as soon as possible. Do not forget it’s compulsory to register with the local police station within 24 hours of your arrival in China.
Moreover, specifically for X1 visa holder, you will then need to apply for a residence permit at the local exit-entry administration bureau within 30 days of your arrival in China. The University will generally help with this process, and make sure to prepare your passport with valid X1 visa, admission notice, JW201/JW202 form, physical examination report, accommodation registration form, and two photos in white background for this procedure. You should also contact your university or program coordinator to confirm your enrollment and orientation details. Be sure to attend any activities organized by your university or program, such as health check-ups, language tests or cultural events.
